This week, we advanced our understanding of the challenges surrounding family memory preservation by conducting a survey, brainstorming key problem statements, and analyzing existing solutions. Here's what we accomplished:

Surveying User Perspectives

We conducted a survey with 30 participants from our target audience, exploring their relationship with family memories and the challenges they face in preserving them.

Key Findings from the Survey:

  • Emotional Connection: 66% of respondents admitted that they find it hard to let go of sentimental items.

  • Positive Impact: 59.1% said these items bring positive emotions and help them feel connected to their loved ones.

  • Emotional Burden: 27.3% reported that while these items connect them to their past, they also create emotional and physical clutter.

These insights reinforced the importance of providing solutions that respect both the emotional and practical aspects of memory preservation.

Analyzing Existing Solutions

We reviewed current tools and services to identify gaps and opportunities for innovation. These included:

  • Digital Solutions: Platforms like MyHeritage and digital photo frames that preserve and display memories.

  • Physical-Digital Integration: Services offering 3D scanning or QR codes to link physical items to digital archives.

  • Analog Solutions: Traditional scrapbooks, memory boxes, and family heirlooms that lack accessibility or organization.

Our analysis revealed that while there are several tools available, many fail to address the emotional complexity and ease-of-use that users need.

Defining Our Problem Space

As a team, we focused on refining our understanding of the challenges by answering the question:"How might we help people bridge the analog and digital worlds when saying goodbye to the physical items of the past, while preserving their family memories?"

This framing helped us prioritize solutions that address both emotional significance and the logistical barriers of organizing and accessing family memories.

We’re excited about the progress we made this week and are eager to continue shaping solutions that truly resonate with our audience!
